Plot: Ray (Mickey Rourke), a low-level criminal recently released from prison, is given a job in Miami by his former boss, Tino Marinelli (Eric Roberts), as the driver and bodyguard for an aging high-priced prostitute named Sofia (Penelope Cruz). Marinelli also wants Ray to gather information on one of Sofia's wealthy customers for blackmail purposes.
Sofia, who has worked hard to develop high-class manners and an elite clientele, initially dislikes the uncouth and outspoken Ray, and he regards her as putting on airs. But as Ray and Sofia find out more about each other, they form a friendship, and Ray begins to fall in love with her. Ray agrees to risk his own life to help Sofia find her friend Clara (Sami Gayle), who has disappeared, and whom Sofia fears is being abused by her violent former pimp, Anderson (Mahershala Ali).
Ray increasingly finds himself torn between his feelings for Sofia, his obligations to his boss Marinelli, and his relationship with his teenage daughter Angela (Kaitlyn Dever), who wants to have her father in her life.
After Anderson attacks Ray, Sofia flees to Tampa. Ray finally finds Clara and takes her to Tampa to reunite her with Sofia, where he lends Sofia his gun. He discovers that Sofia and Clara are lovers, and that Sofia doesn't care about him and only used him to find Clara. Marinelli and Anderson then arrive to take back control of Sofia and Clara, and an enraged Sofia shoots them both dead and then threatens to shoot Ray. He punches her, takes the gun and leaves - upset at her ingratitude. Freed of his criminal obligations, Ray returns to a more normal life, working in a garage and spending time with Angela.

"Penelope Cruz is stunning and electric as always and Mickey Rourke gives yet another comeback performance." - Chris Price, Boston Herald
"Antonio Campos and his all-star cast have completely reinvented Neil Jordan's solid but forgotten 1986 film. The plot is more or less the same, but the vibe, the energy is a whole new beast this time around." - Mark Plainsview, ReelViews
